Annotations future

Purpose

This page should be used to collect the various limitations and known bugs of the current annotation system in MusicBrainz, as well as ideas about how to enhance it and make it evolves toward a better model.

This page has some direct relations with AnnotationHistory (tickets usually begin life here, and finish there).

Outstanding bugs

  • None at present.

Easy enhancements

List of suggested enhancements, supposedly easy to fix:

  • 2581: Enhancement: Similar release screen does not show release date(s), disc id details and release annotation

  • 1980: Enhancement: WikiPage names autosuggest for edit notes+annotations (js patch is already attached)

  • 1853: Enhancement: annotation position on add release edit

  • 1564: Enhancement: Annotations could be collapsed / expanded entirely client side using non intrusive javascript (javascript joined)

  • 1424: Enhancement: show artist annotation when merging

Other enhancements

List of things with some (bigger or unknown) technical impact:

  • 2594: Enhancement: Track annotation do not appear on release page

  • 2395: Enhancement: annotation markup is very limited right now

  • 1789: Enhancement: Annotation add/edit screen: display (and/or link to) what it is you're ...

  • 1619: Enhancement: backlinks for annotations (related to searchable annotations)

  • 1609: Enhancement: allow linking via mbid in annotations and edit-notes

Unconfirmed

  • 2941: Wiki format for annotations suggests url works but it doesn't

NGS/Pie in the sky

Known limitations requiring lots of work and major modifications:

  • 2227: Enhancement: User defined notes and annotations templates (looks quite complicated)

Controversial

  • 2021: Bug: use of non fully qualified url in annotations

Wontfix
